3MVET Mentor’s handbook – a valuable tool for motivated and inspiring mentors

The main aim of 3MVET Mentor’s handbook  is  to support mentors, responsible for the delivery of the practical training in companies, delivered through work placements for VET students/trainees in the field of Mechanical Engineering, Metalworking and Metallurgy (to be applied in its comprehensive version or selectively for the professions available in the respective enterprise). Since our aim is to supply guidance on how to cooperate with the schools when performing the above mentioned tasks, as well as induct and train the student, monitor performance and report back to the school, the handbook is focusing on the following topic areas:

• Roles and responsibilities of the mentor;
• Knowledge, skills and competencies required and ways of acquiring additional qualification, support and existing continuous training opportunities;
• Specifics of the curricula for qualifications in the field of Mechanical Engineering, Metalworking and Metallurgy (theory versus practice);
• Ensuring enough engagement of students in real work activities – challenges, legal obstacles, solutions, addressing the needs of the students;
• Cooperation with the schools – legal provisions, expected results, tasks, joint responsibilities, ensuring coherence between theory and practice, monitoring of work placements, maintaining contact with strategic local and national education and training providers;
• Evaluation of the quality of acquired practical skills by VET students as a result of work placement in company;
• Matching covered units during work placement period to state educational standards and qualification pursued;
• Health and safety;
• Prospects for paid apprenticeships and potential long-term employment of skilled students.
